Historique :	Peinture attribuée à Rubens (vers 1860, Richebé père et Herlin), puis à Antoine Van Dyck (le groupe de droite). Restauration du tableau sous Louis-Philippe par le peintre givetois Vincent Dromart (manteau de saint Jean repeint en rouge) puis en 1857 par le peintre rémois Hécart-Gaillot (cadre actuel). Tableau attribué à Abraham Van Diepenbeeck (1596 ou 1599-1675) grâce à une étude avant restauration par Massot en 1955. Une restauration récente (début des années 1980) a permis de proposer (expertise de Jacques Foucart) une attribution inédite du tableau à Arnold Frans Rubens (1687-1719), artiste anversois spécialisé dans les petites scènes de genre. Il laisse à Givet une oeuvre rare dans son corpus, son unique grande peinture religieuse localisée à ce jour.
